About the airline
British Airways (www.britishairways.com) is the UK’s largest commercial airline based on fleet size, and the second biggest in terms of the number of passengers carried annually. Only EasyJet, a UK low cost carrier, transports more passengers per annum. Based on Waterside, and with its main flight hub situated at London Heathrow International Airport, the airline flies to over 180 destinations as of May 2017. The airline is a founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance, alongside the likes of Cathay Pacific, Qantas, American Airlines and the now defunct Canadian Airlines. It flies under the slogan “To Fly. To Serve.”
The airline is listed on the London Stock Exchange and in the FTSE 100 Index. Also known as BA, the airline merged with Spanish carrier Iberia in 2011, creating International Airlines Group (IAG) the third largest airline group in the world. Together, the group launched another low cost carrier called Fly Level Airlines in the first quarter of 2017. Level Airline is being staffed from within Iberia’s structures, and will be operating low cost flights across the Atlantic to destinations such as Buenos Aires in Argentina.
BA was created in 1974. After having functioned as a state owned enterprise for over a decade, the airline was privatized in February 1987. The airline reported revenues of GBP 11,421 billion for the 2015 fiscal year, with a profit of GBP 975 million. During the same year, the airline carried over 43 million passengers worldwide, with a recorded passenger load factor of over 80%.
In addition to FlyLevel, British Airways counts BA City Flyer, Deutsche BA (up until 2003), South African airline Comair, as well as SunAir of Scandinavia as subsidiaries.
As of the end of 2016, the airline has had codesharing agreements in place with Iberia, Flybe, Finnair, Aer Lingus, Air Berlin, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, LATAM Airlines, Qatar Airways, Royal Jordanian, TAAG Angola, American Airlines, Qantas, S7 and Vueling, to name but a few.
