About the airline
Founded in 1977, Kenya Airways Ltd (www.kenya-airways.com) is the flag carrier airline of Kenya. The airline’s headquarters are situated in Ebakasi, Nairobi, with its primary air hub located at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Kenya Airways was the first African carrier to move from being fully state owned to being privatised in 1996, and currently operates as a public-private partnership enterprise.
The Kenyan Government has a 29.8% shareholding, while KLM owns 26.73% and the rest of the shares are owned by private investors. The airline is listed on the stock exchanges of Nairobi, Dar es Salaam and the Uganda Securities Exchange. KQ, as it is locally known due to the airline’s call code, is rated as one of the leading sub-Saharan air operators. As of 2013, the airline is ranked fourth in Africa in terms of seat capacity. Only South African Airways, Ethiopian Airlines and EgyptAir have greater seat capacities on the continent.
The airline is a member of the SkyTeam airline alliance, and it has been a member of the African Airlines Association since inception. By the end of 2016, the airline was employing 3,989 full time staff members. During the same year, the airline transported 4.2 million passengers along its domestic and international flight route network.
During 2016, the airline reported an annual revenue of KSh116 million, with a net profit of Ksh26 million.
As of the beginning of 2017, Kenya Airways flies to over 60 domestic, regional and international destinations. Key cities include Luanda, Cotonou in Benin, Gaborone in Botswana, Port Louis in Mauritius, Monrovia, Rome, Mumbai, Blantyer in Malawi, Maputo, Amsterdam, Lagos and Abuja, Muscat in Oman, Kigali in Rwanda as well as Freetown in Sierra Leone. The airline also operates regular scheduled flights to both Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa.
Domestically, the airline flies to Eldoret, Kisumu, Lokichogio, Malindi, Mombasa Mumias and the capital, Nairobi. Additional international destinations include Kigali in Rwanda, Stockholm, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Bangkok, Dakar, Istanbul, Abu Dhabi, London, Bristol Entebbe, Harare and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.
The airline counts African Cargo Handling, Kenya Airfreight Handling as well as Jambojet amongst its subsidiary companies.
As of the end of 2016, Kenya Airways enjoys codesharing agreements with the likes of Air Burkina, Air France, Comair, Etihad Airways, KLM, Taag Angola, Saudia, Vietnam Airways, Precision Air, Royal Air Maroc as well as Air Mauritius, Korean Air, and LAM Mozambique.
