About the airline
Lufthansa, also known as Lufthansa German Airlines, is the country’s largest airline. Founded in 1953, the airline today flies to over 220 destinations under the slogan “Nonstop You”. The airline is a publically traded company (FWB: LHA) with its headquarters situated in Cologne, Germany. The airline reportedly earned €32 billion for the 2015 financial year, with a net income of €1.698 billion. By 2015, the company had also already employed over 120,000 full time staff members across its international operations.
Combined with its subsidiary airlines, Lufthansa is also the largest airline in Europe in terms of its fleet size. The airline carried the second highest volume of passengers of any European airline during 2016.
Its main flight hubs are situated at Frankfurt and Munich International Airports, from where the airline flies to 18 domestic and 193 international destinations across 81 countries in Asia, Europe, African as well as North and South America.
Partnerships and subsidiaries
Lufthansa counts Eurowings, Brussels Airlines, Germanwings, Lufthansa Regional, Lufthansa CityLine, Swiss International, Edelweiss Airways as well as SunExpress, Lufthansa Cargo and Air Dolomiti among its subsidiaries.
As of the end of June 2017, Lufthansa will have codeshare agreements in place with Air Canada, Ethiopian Airlines, Air China, South African Airways, United Airlines, Brussels Airlines, TAAG Angola, Air Malta, LATAM, Singapore Airlines, TAP Portugal, Azerbaijan Airlines, Eurowings as well as Etihad Airways, Iran Air and EgyptAir.
Key flight routes and destinations
As of the end of May 2016, Lufthansa Airlines flies to over 220 local and international destinations. The airline also operates regular scheduled flights to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and has recently increased their flight frequencies by adding two new flights per week ahead of the peak Kenya travel season.
From Nairobi, and within the rest of Africa, Lufthansa offers flights to Abijan in Cote d’ Ivoire (Ivory Coast), Lagos and Abuja in Nigeria, Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, Accra in Ghana, Asmara in Eritrea, Cairo in Egypt, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban in South Africa, Dakar in Senegal and Douala in Cameroon.
Additional African destinations include Harare in Zimbabwe, Kampala in Uganda, Khartoum in Sudan, Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Marrakech and Tangier in Morocco as well as Libreville in Gabon and Malabo in Equatorial Guinea.
Lufhansa’s European destinations include Aalborg in Denmark, Cardiff, Birmingham, London and Aberdeen in the UK, Alicante, Madrid and Barcelona in Spain, Bordeaux and Paris in France, Bologna, Catania and Rome in Italy, Brussels in Belgium, Cologne, Munich, Dusseldorf, Dresden, Dusseldorf and Dortmund in Germany, as well as Geneva in Switzerland, Graz in Austria and Gothenburg in Sweden.
Additional international destinations include Hanoi, Ibiza, Jeddah, Karachi, Kathmandu, Kiev, Jakarta, Luanda, Luxembourg, Male, Manama, Manila, Perm, New York, Washington, Porto, Quito, Recife, Sydney, Taipei, Tallinn, Tehran and Tel Aviv.
Economy Class passengers aboard Lufthansa international flights are entitled to 1 free bag weighing up to 23kg. Premium Economy Class passengers are entitled to carry up to 2 bags weighing a maximum of 23kg per bag, while Business Class passengers can check in 2 bags weighing up to 32kg each.
Lufthansa Airways offers passengers a choice between Economy Class, Premium Economy Class as well as Business Class cabins.

The 2017 fleet
By the beginning of June 2017, the airline boasted a fleet of 280 aircraft flying under the Lufthansa Livery. When the rest of its subsidiaries’ fleets are taken into account, the group operates a fleet of over 650 aircraft. This makes Lufthansa’s fleet one of the largest in the world, and has also contributed to the airline being one of the most widely recognized aviation brands in the world.
