About the airline
Precision Air PLC (www.precisionairtz.com, NOT www.precisionair.co.tz) is a Tanzanian airline headquartered in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Its main air hub is situated at Julius Nyerere in Dar es Salaam, with a secondary flights hub situated at Mwanza Airport.
By 2013, the airline boasted a domestic market share of over 48%, the biggest of all Tanzanian airlines. The airline operates scheduled passenger flights to 11 destinations across Tanzania, including regular flights to Nairobi in Kenya. The airline’s frequent flyer air miles program is called PAA Royal.
Precision Airlines, as it is frequently but erroneously searched for online, flies under the slogan “You Are Why We Fly.” The airline was incorporated in 1991 as a private air operator, and commenced flight operations in 1993. It operated as a privately owned entity until 2003, when Kenyan Airways bought a 49% stake in the company for $2 million. This acquisition came only weeks after the latter’s rival, South African Airways, acquired a 49% shareholding in domestic rival airline Air Tanzania for ten times that price. The airline’s stocks can be traded on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange.
It was the first Tanzanian airline to pass an IATA Operational Safety Audit, and by the first quarter of 2016, it employed over 500 full time employees across its regional operations.
The airline listed a a public company in April 2011, and reported a loss of TSh 91.7 million for the 2016 financial year. During the same financial year, the airline reportedly transported over 375,000 passengers throughout Tanzania and Kenya, with a load factor of 52%.
Key flight routes and destinations
As of the beginning of 2017, Precision Air operates regular scheduled passenger flights to Zanzibar, Pemba, Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Bukoba, Moroni, Kigoma, Arusha nd Moshi, Mtwara and Mwanza in Tanzania, as well as Nairobi in Kenya.
The 2017 fleet
As of May 2017, the Precision Air Fleet includes 3 ATR 42-500s, 1 ATR 42-600, and 5 ATR 72-500s. Previous aircraft models included the Boeing 737-200, the Bombardier Dash 8 and the ATR 42-320.
Partnerships and codeshare agreements
As of the end of 2016, the airline has codeshare agreements in place with Kenya Airways along various routes, Rwandair on the Kigali – Kilimanjaro route, LAM Mozambique on the Maputo, Nampula, Pemba and Dar es Salaam routes, as well as Etihad Airways along the Abu Dhabi – Dar es Salaam route. In addition, Fly Precision has a regular interline agreement with Qatar Airways, allowing Fly Qatar’s passengers to connect to various East African destinations with ease. This agreement also covers eticketing.
Precision Air additionally has interline agreements for luggage and paper based ticket issuance with British Airways, Alitalia, Delta Airlines, TAAG Angola Airlines, Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Gulf Air, Hahn Air (Germany) Air Seychelles and KLM. Additional interline agreement partners include Kenya Airways, Air Malawi, Swiss Airlines, South African Airways (SAA), Saudia Airlines, SN Brussels Airline as well as LAM Mozambique, Oman Air and RwandAir.
